The 2007 season saw a whole bunch of teams with two losses at the end of the regular season. Ohio State was the only one loss team at the end of the season from a major conference. LSU got to play Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game and beat them, thereby securing the National Championship in most polls.

The Dunkel System, a computerized rating system, awarded USC the National Championship. USC was coached by Pete Carroll in 2007. The team had two close losses in the middle of the season: Stanford (23-24) and Oregon (17-24). However, the Trojans finished the season very strong, rolling off five straight wins with an impressive 49-17 victory over Illinois in the Rose Bowl.

Given that USC was not allowed to settle this on the field and the fact that Dunkel awarded USC the National Championship, why shouldn’t USC claim this has a National Championship? They don’t, but why shouldn’t they?

Factoid 394 - Kyle Whittingham’s 2008, 13-0, UTAH team went undefeated. Why shouldn’t Utah claim this as a National Championship?
