Factoid 248 - College Football in 1925

Date: 8/21/14

In 1925 there were 104 teams playing college football, the Rose Bowl was played, and three teams were selected national champions: Alabama; Dartmouth; and Michigan.

Alabama won its first National Championship. They solidified their national championship by beating the Washington Huskies (10-0-1) by a score of 20-19 in the 1926 Rose Bowl. This Rose Bowl was the first time when intersectional powerhouses met, and it closely resembled a “true” National Championship game.

It is interesting to note this was the first Alabama National Championship with many more to follow, 56 years after the start of college football. This season also demonstrated how the fans get ripped off when there are no true playoffs (three teams from three different regions of the country claiming national championships).

National Champions

  • Alabama 10–0 Wallace Wade (BR, BS, CFRA, HAF, HS, NCF, PS, SR) *
  • Dartmouth 8–0 Jesse Hawley (DiS, PD) *
  • Michigan 7–1 Fielding H. (Yost SR) *
