One of the big arguments against a 16-team playoff is that the players would have to play too many games and the season would be too long and grueling. Well let’s look at the numbers:
Round
Extra Games
First Round:
The four teams that would be in today’s four team playoffs play an extra game in this round. The other teams do not as they would be in a Bowl Game.
4
Second Round:
The four teams that would be in today’s four team playoffs play an extra game in this round and the other four teams that advance would play an extra game.
8
Semi Finals (third round):
This is in the present playoff system so no extra games are played.
0
Finals (Fourth round):
This is in the present playoff system so no extra games are played.
0
Total:
12
So to summarize four teams play an extra two games and four teams play one extra game, so that is 12 more college football games. The most games that would be played by a team based on a 12 game regular season is 17. The NFL Super Bowl winner plays 19 games.
Not every year are the same teams in the playoffs and not every year the same team advances. We think saying the season would be too grueling and too long is just not valid. What do you think?
