We have dubbed 1973 “The Confusing Season.” Why? Because five teams claimed a national championship through one polling service or another:

Team RecordCoachPolling Service Awarding Championship
Alabama11-1Bear BryantB(QPRS), UPI
Michigan10-0-1Bo SchembechlerNCF, PS
Notre Dame11-0Ara ParseghianAP, BR, FN, FWAA, HAF, NCF, NFF
Ohio State10-0-1Woody HayesNCF, PS, R(FACT), SR
Oklahoma10-0-1Barry SwitzerCFRA, DeS, DuS, SR

Five teams with only one loss between them, five legendary coaches, OSU and Michigan beat up on each other, Notre Dame beat Alabama in the Sugar Bowl, while Oklahoma and Michigan didn’t even go to a bowl game. There is not much more to say about this season other than that the fans were ripped off in what could have been a classic playoff season. Don’t forget to VOTE.
