In 1922 the Alabama Crimson Tide beat the Penn Quakers 9-7. Penn was considered one of the Big Four powerhouses in College Football. By 1925 the polls thought enough of the Tide’s 10-0 team to vote them as the number one team.
Slowly but surely the South’s power in football began to rise and the East’s began to fall. This shift was happening elsewhere as well in the Midwest and on the Pacific Coast. Today the Ivy League is no longer in Division 1, it is also rare for an East Coast team to challenge for a National Championship.
