Quarterback Harry Gilmer from the University of Alabama was the first pick in the 1948 NFL Draft. He was drafted by the Washington Redskins.
Gilmer was an All-American in 1945 when he had a spectacular year as a sophomore. (Freshmen were not allowed to play yet.) He was also Alabama’s punter and kick returner.
He had a nine year NFL career and played for the Redskins and the Lions. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
