Notre Dame last won the National Championship in 1988 when they went 12-0 under head coach Lou Holtz. That year they upset the Number One Ranked Miami Hurricanes by a score of 31-30. They capped off their undefeated season beating the West Virginia Mountaineers 34-21 in the Fiesta Bowl.

In 1988 Notre Dame was the only undefeated Division I-A Team in the country. It has been 27 years since Notre Dame won a National Championship. Their teams have been mediocre most of the time. They did make it to the BCS National Championship Game for the 2012 season, but got trounced by the Alabama Crimson Tide 42-14.
