Halfback Tom Harmon was the number one draft pick in 1941. He was drafted by the Chicago Bears, but chose to try his career in the movies. It was a career that was short-lived and interrupted by the war.

Tom played for the University of Michigan and won the Heisman and the Maxwell awards in 1940.* He served in the Army in World War II, and after the war played in the NFL for two years as a Los Angeles Ram.

He retired from football after he broke his nose for the 13th time. Tom went from making $1,500 a week as a player to $100 a week as a radio announcer.

Tom Harmon went on to have a very successful career as a sports broadcaster.

* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
