Quarterback Terry Baker from Oregon State was the first pick of the 1963 NFL Draft. Terry was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams. Defensive tackle Buck Buchanan from Grambling was the first pick of the 1963 AFL Draft*. Buck was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs.

In 1962 Terry Baker was a Consensus All-American and won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award.

Terry played for the Rams for three seasons and then with the CFL’s Edmonton Eskimos for one year. He went on the become a lawyer. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Buck Buchanan was an NAIA All-America selection. (Grambling is a college in Louisiana, but is not and was not in “Division One”.)

Buchanan went on to play for the Kansas City Chiefs for 13 seasons. He is a six-time 6× AFL All-Star (1964–1969) and two-time Pro Bowl Selection (1970, 1971). He is a Super Bowl Winner; his Chiefs defeated the Vikings by a score of 23 to 7 in Super Bowl IV.

Buchanan is in the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
