Michigan last won the National Championship in 1997 when they went 12-0 under head coach Loyd Carr. That year they beat their rival Ohio State 21-16 in their own stadium. They capped off their undefeated season beating Washington State 21-16 in the Rose Bowl.

That same year Tom Osborne’s Nebraska Cornhuskers went 13 -0 and defeated the third ranked Tennessee Volunteers in the Orange Bowl. This was before the BCS and before the playoffs, because of Bowl arrangements with various conferences Nebraska could not play Michigan and the fans were ripped off with two fictitious National Champions.

Since 1997 Michigan has lost at least two games a year. In 1997 it had been 49 years since Michigan won a National Championship, in 1948 Bennie Oosterbaan’s Wolverines went 9-0 to claim the National Championship. Coach Bo Schembechler’s poor record in bowl games (5-12), specifically the Rose Bowl (1-9), greatly contributed to this drought in National Championships.
