The 1921 College Football season and six National Championships. (Factoid 487)

Date: 5/15/15
The 1921 season saw six teams recognized as National Champions: California 9–0–1; Cornell 8–0; Iowa 7–0; Lafayette 9–0; Washington & Jefferson 10–0–1; and Vanderbilt 7–0–1. That is a lot of teams. Four of the schools claim these as National Championships: California; Cornell; Lafayette; and Washington & Jefferson.

The Iowa Hawkeyes went 7–0 and were coached by Howard Jones. Parke Davis awarded Iowa the National Championship. Why don’t they claim this? They should.

Similarly, Vanderbilt went 7-0-1 and was coached by Dan McGugin. Berryman (QPRS) recognized Vanderbilt as the National Champion. Why doesn’t Vanderbilt claim this as a National Championship? They should.
