Factoid 236 - The 1991 College Football season.
Date:
8/9/14
In 1991 there 107 teams in Division 1, 18 bowl games, Desmond Howard (WR/KR) won the Heisman, and two teams tied for the national championship: the Miami Hurricanes and the Washington Huskies.
The Miami Hurricanes went 12-0 winning the Orange Bowl against Nebraska, winning by a score of 22-0. Dennis Erickson coached Miami and Gino Torretta was the starting quarterback. Gino won the Heisman but was only drafted in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings and ended up washing out in the NFL.
The Washington Huskies went 12-0, winning the Rose Bowl against Michigan, winning by a score of 34-14. Don James coached the Huskies; he was in his 17th year as head coach for Washington. This would be his first and only national championship. The Huskies were led by Steve Emtman (DT) who was the first pick of the NFL draft for the Indianapolis Colts; injuries, however, would limit his career, an NFL career that was a disappointment.
The Huskies and Hurricanes were the #1 and #2 teams in the country; however, because their respective conferences had agreements with the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl, an end of seasons #1 vs. #2 matchup was impossible. The BSC National Championship game corrected this type of scenario. It began in 1998 and has now been replaced by the FBS four team playoff. (Faniacs advocates a 16 team playoff. Go ahead and VOTE for it.)
