Wisconsin does not claim any National Championship, however in 1942 Coach Stuhldreher’s team went 8-1-1 and was selected National Champion by the Helms Athletic Foundation. This is the only National Champion Wisconsin has ever won, so Coach Stuhldreher is the first and only Wisconsin coach to win a National Championship.

The 1942 season saw Wisconsin tie Notre Dame and upset the number one ranked Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 17-7 at Camp Randall Stadium. Wisconsin also beat a tenth ranked Minnesota team 20-6. Even though Wisconsin had beat Ohio State and they had the same conference record, Ohio State won the conference based on the criteria at the time: Ohio State was 9-1 and Wisconsin was 8-1-1, Wisconsin’s tie being the deciding criteria.

The 1942 team was led by end Dave Schreiner, a two-time All-American and the 1942 Big Ten’s Most Valuable Player. Schreiner was drafted by the Detroit Lions but enlisted in the Army to serve his country. Dave Schreiner died June 21, 1941 during the Battle of Okinawa. His life and death are detailed in the book Third Down and War to Go.
