Factoid 13 - Bear Bryant: All Time Leader in National Championships
Date:
12/3/13
Bear Bryant as head coach of Maryland in 1945
Bear Bryant is the all time leader in NCAAF national championships with ten.
Bear Bryant was born on September 11, 1913 and was the eleventh of twelve children. He was the head football coach for University of Maryland (1945), University of Kentucky (1946-1953), Texas A&M University (1954-1957), and the University of Alabama from 1958 until his retirement in 1982. He finished with an overall record of 323–85–17.
He won a national championship with Kentucky in 1950 by defeating the heavily favored and number one ranked Oklahoma Sooners in the Sugar Bowl; the remaining nine were all won while he was at the University of Alabama. Since the only way the championships were determined in his era was by polls, not all of these were outright but impressive nonetheless, (For instance, in 1950 four separate teams were named national champions in various polls.)
