Factoid 369 – How many times have The Ohio States Buckeyes finished 2nd at the end of the season?

Date: 1/17/15

The Ohio State Buckeyes have finished 2nd five times under four different coaches. Coach Carroll Widdoes’ 1944 team finished second in the AP Poll with a record of 9-0. Coach Woody Hayes’ 1973 team finished second in the AP Poll with a record of 10-0-1. Coach John Cooper’s 1998 team finished second in the AP and Coaches Poll with a record of 11-1 and his 1998 team finished second in the AP and Coaches Poll with a record of 11-1. Coach Jim Tressel’s 2006 team finished second in the AP and Coaches Poll with a record of 12-1

We counted the AP and Coaches Poll in our analysis. Other polls actually had Ohio State ranked as the number one team in the country for some of these years. Most notably, the undefeated 1944 team was ranked number one by the National Championship Foundation and the Sagarin Ratings. Ohio State does not claim this as a National Championship, even though we would ask: why not? Noone beat them that year, and some polls voted them as number one. This was before championships were settled on the field.
