Coach Herb Alward was the first Wisconsin coach to have a winning record. Coach Alward would coach his first and only season in 1891. His team went 3-1-1. During that season they lost to Minnesota 12-26, tied Northwestern 0-0, and defeated Northwestern 40-0 in the last game of the season. (They played Northwestern twice that year.)
Before Alward was coach, he played for Harvard in 1890. Coach Alward died of typhoid fever in 1897.
