Factoid 406 - Who has the 9th best all time Wonderlic score for an NFL Prospect?

Date: 2/23/15
Drew Henson, QB for Michigan, scored a 42 on the Wonderlic, which earned him the honor of the 9th best score on this test in NFL history. Henson played for the Wolverines from 1998 to 2000. Henson was also a baseball player. He was backup for Tom Brady in 1998 and 1999. In 2000 he won the starting job for Michigan (Brady had left) and ended up having a prolific 2000 season. In 2000 he led the Big Ten in pass completion percentage.

“The Wonderlic is a 50-question test administered to all combine participants that measures cognitive ability. The time limit is 12 minutes. A score of 20 is indicative of ‘average’ intelligence and roughly equivalent to an IQ of 100. Apr 12, 2014.” - ESPN

After college Henson first tried playing professional baseball but gave up on this in 2004. In the 2003 NFL draft the Houston Texans chose him as the 192nd pick in the 6th round. The Texans traded him to Dallas. He had a brief NFL career from 2004 to 2008 with limited playing time. Perhaps his intelligence didn’t allow him to concentrate on the rote tasks of sports. In this case the high Wonderlic score did not translate to NFL success.
