Factoid 19 - Notre Dame is third in NCAAF National Championships with 22
Date:
12/9/13
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish hold the record of the third most NCAA football championships with 22 of them.
In 1919, with Knute Rockne as their coach, the Fighting Irish won their first NCAA Football Championship, although four other teams claimed the title as well in one poll or another, he would go and win six more. The other Fighting Irish who have won national championships are Elmer Layden (1), Frank Leahy (4), Ara Parseghian (5), Dan Devine (1), and Lou Holtz(3).
The Cooley Matrix, is mathematically based selector which chooses the national champion based on all sorts of variables, in 2012 it awarded the Fighting Irish the national championship, so you might say that Brian Kelly also won a national championship. However, those who watched Notre Dame lose to Alabama, 14 to 42, in the BCS National Championship game would call that a farce. None-the-less, the Cooley Matrix exists. Notre Dame has never won a BCS National Championship game.
