Factoid 411 - Who has the 6th worst all time Wonderlic score for an NFL Prospect?

Date: 2/28/15

Vince Young, QB for Texas, scored a 6 on the Wonderlic, which earned him the honor of the 6th worst score on this test in NFL history. Vince Young played for Texas from 2003 to 2005. He started in 2004 and 2005. His passing and his running were exceptional, especially in the 2005 season in which he: ran for 1,050 yards; passed for 3,036; won the BCS National Championship; was the MVP in the BCS National Championship; and placed 2nd in the Heisman.

“The Wonderlic is a 50-question test administered to all combine participants that measures cognitive ability. The time limit is 12 minutes. A score of 20 is indicative of ‘average’ intelligence and roughly equivalent to an IQ of 100. Apr 12, 2014.” - ESPN

In the 2006 NFL draft the Tennessee Titans drafted Vince Young in the first round making him the 3rd overall pick, despite the low Wonderlic score. Vince played for the Titans from 2006 to 2010, then was traded to the Eagles in 2011. After 2011 he has only been a practice squad member. He is a two time Pro Bowler; however, he has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns in his career.

Overall, Young had an average NFL career, which is now more or less over. Did the Wonderlic predict he would not succeed in the NFL? Well, it was an indicator, and in this instance we would have to say that the Titans wasted a draft choice on Young.
