The New Orleans Bowl has been played since 2001. The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have played in it four times and won three. They won in 2004 vs. North Texas by a score of 31-10, the won in 2005 vs. Arkansas State by a score of 31-19, and the won again in 2008 in overtime vs. Troy by a score of 30-27. In 2009 they lost to Middle Tennessee by a score of 42-32. They have won the game three times and have the most victories in the New Orleans Bowl and have a chance to add to this on December 17, 2016 as they play the Louisiana–Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns at 8 PM EST.
In the 2008 New Orleans Bowl Austin Davis won the MVP on a performance of 20 completed passes for a total of 276 yards and two touchdowns, as well as 37 yards rushing. This was a thrilling overtime victory. Presently, Austin is a backup quarterback for the NFL’s Denver Broncos.
