Coach Frederick Bushnell "Jack" Ryder was the first coach to have a winning season at Ohio State. Coach Ryder coached the Buckeyes from 1892 to 1895 and again in 1898. This was the only school he would ever coach. His overall record was 22-22-2.

OSU’s first winning season was in 1892, when OSU went 5-3. Coach’s five victories came vs. Akron, Marietta, Denison, Dayton YMCA, and Kenyon. The Buckeyes would outscore their opponents 264 to 144. Their real nemesis was Oberlin, which beat them twice, once by 4-40 and the second time by 0-50.

Coach Ryder was Ohio State’s first paid coach. His salary was $15 a week, his season total salary being $150. Adjusted for inflation this is $3892.43 for the season, probably not even a decent high school coach’s salary nowadays.

Coach Ryder would probably be scratching his head in regards to Urban Meyer’s salary of $4.5 million a year. Coach Ryder would end up being a successful sports writer. I am sure he would much rather have coached at Urban’s salary.
