Factoid 368 – What is the highest ranking the Oregon Ducks have had at the end of the season?

Date: 1/16/15

The Oregon Ducks have finished 2nd three times under three different coaches. Coach Mike Bellotti’s 2001 team finished second in the AP and Coaches Poll with a record of 11-1. Coach Chip Kelly’s 2012 team finished second in the AP and Coaches Poll with a record of 12-1. Coach Mark Helfrich’s 2014 team finished second in the AP and Coaches Poll with a record of 13-2.

In the 2001 season the Ducks lost to Stanford 42 - 49 in mid-season. They just missed out playing the BCS National Championship, which was not uncontroversial, as an 11-1 Nebraska team went to the BSC National Championship game to face an undefeated Miami Hurricanes. Nebraska went, even though they lost their last regular season game to Colorado by a score of 62-32. This loss cost Nebraska an appearance in their conference championship game. Oregon had a clear case that they should go to the National Championship game; instead, Nebraska was selected. A messy situation; one that cannot happen again, as there is now a four team playoff.

In the 2012 and 2014 seasons Oregon did go the National Championship game and lost. In 2014 they were inaugural participants of the College Football Playoffs and trounced Florida State 59-20 in the semi-finals. However in the finals they were trounced by Ohio State 42-20; the score was much closer than it should have been thanks to Ohio State’s four turnovers.

What will it take for Oregon to win a National Championship? We will cover this later in the off season on our Blog. Unfortunately for Oregon, they are always the bridesmaid and never the bride.
