It turns out there are two answers to this, and both are right. Paul Brown won an AP and other major polls’ National Championship with his 9-1 1942 team. However, nine years earlier Coach Sam Willaman went 7-1 and was awarded the National Championship by the Dunkel System.
At Faniacs, if there is a poll selecting your team as a National Champion, then in our eyes you are a National Champion, so Sam Willaman won Ohio State’s first National Championship in 1933, although the school does not recognize this Championship. We are of the opinion they should. Lacking a playoff, why not? Without that it is just guesswork who is the best.
Sam Willaman would coach the Buckeyes from 1929 to 1933. He would amass a record of 26-10-4, and his highest finish in the Big Ten would be 2nd. His only loss that year was a 0-13 performance vs. Michigan. He was 2-3 vs. Michigan. Not good enough at Ohio State with that, and not winning a Big Ten Championship would cost him his job in 1933.
