Golden Richards holds the record for the highest average gain per punt return in a game. Richards played for BYU from 1970 to 1971 and for Hawaii in 1972. He set the record at BYU in a game vs. Texas, a game which BYU won by a score of 41-13. He set the record with 43.8 yards per punt return (minimum of five returns).

Richards went on to play in the NFL for the Dallas Cowboys (1973–1978), Chicago Bears (1978–1979), and the Denver Broncos (1980). Injuries shortened his career. His golden moment, no pun intended, came in Super Bowl XII as a Dallas Cowboy, where he caught a 29 year touchdown pass from fullback Robert Newhouse to seal the victory: 27-10 vs. the Denver Broncos.
