Factoid 384 - Incongruent College Football seasons

Date: 2/1/15

We are starting a series in our Factoids on incongruent college football seasons. What is an incongruent college football season? We are defining it as a season where a team was undefeated and yet they didn’t win the national championship one way or another.

There are plenty of these types of seasons, and we will have a final count when our series is finished. This is also the reason why we are staunch advocates of a 16 team playoff; settle it on the field and not in the newspapers or by committees. (Vote for a 16 team playoff!)

This week we will cover four such seasons:

  • Carroll Widdoes’ undefeated 1944 team (Ohio State)
  • Frank Thomas’ undefeated 1945 team (Alabama)
  • Knute Rockne’s undefeated 1919 team (Notre Dame)
  • Dave Allerdice’s undefeated 1919 team (Texas)

Factoid 385 - Carroll Widdoes’ undefeated 1944 team; why does Ohio State not claim this as a National Championship?
