Halfback Frank Sinkwich from the University of Georiga was the number one pick in the 1943 draft. He was drafted by the Detroit lions.
He won the Heisman in 1942 *. He was a two time All-American and led his Georgia team to an 11-1 season and a Rose Bowl victory over UCLA in 1942.
In 1944 he won the NFL’s most valuable player award. In 1945 he joined the US Armed forces where he injured his knee playing football. This then limited his football ability and while he tried to play again in the NFL his playing days were over.
* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
