Factoid 409 - Who has the 7th worst all time Wonderlic score for an NFL Prospect?

Date: 2/26/15
Chris Leak, QB for Florida, scored an 8 on the Wonderlic, which earned him the honor of the 7th worst score on this test in NFL history. Leak played for Florida from 2003 to 2006. He threw for 11,213 yards over his college career and passed for 88 touchdowns. In 2006 he was the starting QB for the National Champion Florida Gators.

“The Wonderlic is a 50-question test administered to all combine participants that measures cognitive ability. The time limit is 12 minutes. A score of 20 is indicative of ‘average’ intelligence and roughly equivalent to an IQ of 100. Apr 12, 2014.” – ESPN

Leak was not drafted in the 2006 draft; perhaps his low Wonderlic score had something to do with this. The Chicago Bears signed him immediately after the draft, but he was eventually cut from the Bears roster on September 16, 2007. From 2008 to 2011 he tried his hand in the CFL but was ultimately unsuccessful.

Did the Wonderlic predict Leak’s lack of success? Who knows; however, with today’s sophisticated offenses an intelligent QB is definitely an asset. A low score on the Wonderlic may indicate a QB cannot handle the complexities of a modern NFL offense.
