Tom Osborne (1965)
Tom Osborne is tied for second in the number of NCAA football national championships won.
Tom Osborne won a total of nine NCAAF football national championships via one poll or another. He was born February 23, 1937, played college football at Hastings College, and went on to play three years in the NFL as wide receiver. He joined the Nebraska Corn Huskers as an offensive assistant in 1964, was named the offensive coordinator in 1969, and eventually became head coach in 1973.
As his entire coaching career was at the University Nebraska, that is also,of course, where all of his National Championships were one, but as usually happened in the polling championships, he often shared the honors with others. For instance, in 1980 five teams, including Nebraska, shared the college football national championship via one poll or another. (The other teams were: Florida State, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, and Georgia.)
