Howard Jones was the first Ohio State coach to be elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. In a sense though, this is a trick question, as Coach Jones only coached OSU in 1910 to a 6-1-3 record, finishing third in the Ohio State Athletic Conference.
However, Coach Jones can claim five National Championships:
1. 1909 - as the coach of the Yale Bulldogs
2. 1928 - as the coach of the USC Trojans
3. 1931 - as the coach of the USC Trojans
4. 1932 - as the coach of the USC Trojans
5. 1939 - as the coach of the USC Trojans
6. (In 1921 Coach Jones’ Iowa team went 9-0 and was awarded the National Championship by PD. Depending on your mindset, you may or may not want to count this one. )
Clearly, Coach Jones’ major legacy is as coach of the USC Trojans, where he went 121-36-13 and won three National Championships. Nonetheless, he did coach Ohio State and was a Hall of Fame Coach.
