The USC Trojans’ first coach was actually two player coaches during their inaugural 1888 season: Henry H. Goddard and Frank Suffel. Little information is available on Suffel, but Goddard went on to become a prominent American psychologist and eugenicist. They only coached the Trojans in their first season.
USC went 2-0 in 1888 playing the Alliance Athletic Club. They won their first game vs. Alliance 16-0 and the second game vs. Alliance by a score of 4-0. At the time they were not yet called the Trojans but the Methodists or Wesleyens.
