Who was the First Player Ever Drafted in the NFL Draft? (Factoid 770)

Date: 2/20/16

Jay Berwanger - DB at University of Chicago 1933-1955
Selected first by the Philadelphia Eagles

The first NFL Draft was held in 1936. Halfback Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago was the first player ever drafted, therefore he was also the first number one pick. Even though he was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles, he neither played for them nor did he play in the NFL.

In 1935* he was also the first Heisman trophy winner as well as a consensus All-American.

In the 1936 draft there were only nine NFL teams and salaries were similar, if not lower, than most average American wages at the time. * Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
