Factoid 245 - College Football in 1895

Date: 8/18/14

In 1895 there were 27 teams playing college football. There were two undefeated National Champions for that season: the Yale Bulldogs (Yale had two ties) and the Penn Quakers. College football was moving west and conferences were being formed: The Western Interstate University Football Association had four teams: Kansas; Nebraska; Missouri; and Iowa, with three teams claiming conference co-champions for that year, Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri.

The Penn Quakers went 14-0 in 1895; their coach was George W. Woodruff (in his 4th year), and they played in Franklin Field. The Yale Bulldogs went 13-0-2 and were coached by first year coach John A. Hartwell. Their home stadium was Yale Field. Penn outscored their opponents by 480 to 24, while Yale outscored their opponents by 313 to 30.

Yale beat Williams College by a score of 54 to 0 on October 23 of the 1895 season, while Penn did so twice, once against Lehigh and once against Virginia (scores Urban Meyer could be proud of).
