In 1881 there were ten teams playing college football: Princeton Tigers; Rutgers Scarlet Knights; Columbia Lions; Yale Bulldogs; Harvard Crimson; Penn Quakers; Brown Bears; Navy Midshipmen; UMass Minutemen; and Michigan Wolverines. Rutgers, Navy, UMass, and Michigan are the only schools from that era still playing at the FBS level. The National Champions for that year are listed below (the Ivy League was dominant).

  • The United States National Lawn Tennis Association (USNLTA) was founded, and the first U.S. Tennis Championships were played.

  • The fifth hurricane of the Atlantic season hit Florida and the Carolinas, killing about 700.
