Factoid 14 - Woody Hayes: Tied for Second in the Number of National Championships Won
Date:
12/4/13
Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes with fullback Dick Doyle and assistant coach Ernie Godfrey.
Woody Hayes is tied for second in the number of NCAA football national championships won.
Woody Hayes won a total of nine NCAAF football national championships via one poll or another. Woody Hayes was born on February 14, 1913. He played tackle for Denison University, which also happened to be his first head coaching job. He coached Denison for three years (1946-1948), then moved onto Miami University (Ohio) where he coached for two years (1949-1950), and then accepted the head coaching job at The Ohio State University in 1951.
His nine national titles were not all unanimous over all polling services, for example, in 1975 season they were the top ranked team in the country going into the Rose Bowl, which they lost 23 to 10 to the UCLA Bruins. Still five polling services voted them number one in the country, but others voted for Arizona State, Oklahoma, or Alabama.
