Coach Hiland Orlando Stickney was the first to beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers. This was the fifth time the teams played. The series started in 1890 and was dominated by Minnesota the first four times they played with Minnesota outscoring Wisconsin 161-16 during that time period.

On November 17, 1894 Stickney’s Badgers beat the Golden Gophers by 6-0. Stickney coached the Badgers for two seasons and had a record of 10–4–1. Coach Stickney had played tackle at Harvard and coached Grinnell for one season before becoming Wisconsin’s coach. After Wisconsin he would coach Oregon State for one season in 1899 to 3-2 record.
