Factoid #10 - 1964 - Alabama Wins National Championship! (Sort of)

Date: 1/14/65
A Young Joe Namath

The 1964 Alabama team was quarterbacked by Joe Namath and coached by Bear Bryant. They finished the regular season undefeated, but lost in the Orange Bowl to the Texas Longhorns who ranked fifth prior to the game. This set up a chain of events that led to four teams - the Alabama Crimson Tide, the Arkansas Razorbacks, University of Michigan Wolverines, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish - claiming the Championship via 15 different titles.

It is very ironic that in this championship Alabama claims this as a championship and it counts on Bear Bryant’s record as well; it is what it is. However, I think the University of Michigan team that sent 16 players to the NFL would have loved to play the Crimson Tide.
