In 1980 Herschel Walker, RB, Georgia, ran for 1,616 yards for a 5.9 yards per carry average and 15 rushing TDs.

Herschel was able to lead his team to a 12-0 record and a National Championship. Herschel had the size, speed, strength to dominate. He finished third in the Heisman that year, which he eventually won in 1982. He was a Consensus All-American and the SEC Player of the Year.
His performance, as well as his team winning the National Championship, seal this as one of the greatest freshman years ever.
