Factoid 243 - College Football in 1875

Date: 8/16/14

In 1875 there were six teams playing college football. Three teams were chosen as national champions via one selector* or another: the Columbia Lions; Harvard Crimson; and the Princeton Tigers. The Tigers are the only school that claims a title from that year.

In 1875 teams still did not have coaches. Princeton finished the year 2-0 and was retroactively awarded the National Championship by the Billingsley Report and Parke H. Davis. It was their last of four consecutive championships and one of 11 in a 13 year period between 1869 and 1881.
