Blog - #39 - Braxton Miller Hurt / Odds to Win National Championship Revised

Braxton Miller by Adam Glanzman

The Columbus Dispatch reported earlier this week that Braxton Miller will be out the entire season due to a shoulder injury (see full article). His replacement will be J.T. Barrett. Buckeye Nation seems to think the season is not over; in fact, J.T. is Urban Meyer’s recruit, so this season we should be able to see Meyer’s full impact as a coach and recruiter at Ohio State. Time will tell.

Prognosticators were not so generous as (delusional) Buckeye Nation; they dropped Ohio State’s odds of winning the National Championship from 5th (10/1) to a tie for 16th with Michigan (50/1). We think this is a fair assessment of their odds to win it all.

As a result of Miller’s injury, Vegas Insiders’ odds were revised (see full list) and have the following as the top five:

  • Florida State 18/5 (Previous 6/1)
  • Alabama 6/1 (Previous 13/2)
  • Oregon 7/1 (Previous 7/1)
  • Auburn 10/1 (Previous 10/1)
  • Oklahoma 12/1 (Previous 12/1)

As you can see, Oklahoma moved up to the 5th spot, while Auburn solidified at fourth. Also, as a result of the injury, Florida State’s and Alabama’s odds to win it all became better. We are predicting Oregon, not so much based on their merits, but on the fact that we just don’t think Jameis Winston can repeat last year’s success, and we think Alabama will have an off year (it is just too hard to continue their level of success). As for Auburn and Oklahoma: we think Oregon is clearly the better team. The Pac-10 is also due for a National Championship from one of its teams (Oregon).
