Coach Ivy Williamson won the Big Ten Conference in 1952. Coach Williamson’s 1952 team went 4-1-1 in league play and 6-3-1 overall, beating the number two ranked Fighting Illini by a score of 20-6. Wisconsin’s last Big Ten game of that season was a 21-21 tie with Minnesota, which, however, was enough for them to win the Big Ten.

Coach Williamson’s overall record at Wisconsin was 41–19–4 with one Big Ten Championship and one Rose Bowl appearance (0-7 loss to USC). He coached from 1949 to 1955 and only had one losing season, which was his last as a coach in 1955. He became athletic director after the death of Guy Sundt, stepping down from his position as head coach.
