In 1971 128 teams were in Division 1. The season started with Notre Dame as the preseason number one; however, Nebraska would win the National Championship outright with no co-champions.
Nebraska was able to play Alabama (#2) in the Orange Bowl: a game which Nebraska won 38-6 and most certainly solidified their lock on outright champion. Bob Devaney was the coach for Nebraska.
