Congrats to Marcus Mariota for winning the 2014 Heisman trophy! Mariota swept all five voting regions and broke one Heisman records by appearing on 95.2 percent of this year’s 894 ballots. Here is a link to an interesting perspective on who did not put him on the ballot: Click Here.

2006 Heisman Trophy winner: Troy Smith - QB for The Ohio State Buckeyes.

Troy Smith, the 2006 Heisman Trophy, winner won with 91.6% of voters picking him. Mariota was close this year at 90.9%, which gives him second place. Unfortunately for Troy Smith, that was the highlight of his career, as he laid an egg against Florida in the BCS National Championship, losing 41-14. In the game vs. Florida Troy appeared 20 pounds heavier than during the regular season. This performance cost him being drafted higher, and since he wasn’t drafted high enough, teams never had to give him as big a chance as higher drafted players. He did have a long career as a backup in the NFL, practice squad member, United Football League, and the CFL, but probably not the type of career a Heisman Trophy winner would have wanted.

Here is hoping that Mariota has a good game vs. Florida State in the first ever FBS College Football Playoffs, and that he has a very productive pro career. We are hoping this for him, ourselves, and football fans!
