Yale is second in most victories for a college football program, they have 879.*

Yale started playing football in 1872, getting an early start helps amass these numbers of victories. In 1936 the Associated Press Poll was created after which Princeton and the Ivy League lost their dominant influence in college football. The AP Poll was the straw that broke the camel’s back as the size and the strength of public universities, as well as some private ones, lead to the demise of Yale and the Ivy League in the sport of college football. In 1978, Princeton, along with the other Ivy League schools moved to Division II A for smaller schools.

Slowly and eventually, the laws of numbers will take over and they will lose their number two all time ranking and slowly move down the list, as they only play 10 games per season with a possible bowl game. The major programs have 12 to 13 regular season games and almost always play in a bowl game, as well as a possible conference championship game.
