Factoid #6 - 1975 - Four teams win the NCAA football championship? Again?

Date: 1/1/75
Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes with fullback Dick Doyle and assistant coach Ernie Godfrey.

The 1975 season saw four teams claim a national championship through one selector or another of which at the time there were 21. If Ohio State had beat UCLA like they did earlier in the season, then the polls would have been much less sloppy. (It was speculated that legendary coach Woody Hayes was set to retire if he won the Rose Bowl against UCLA that year.) Instead the Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama Crimson Tide, Arizona Sun Devils, and The Ohio State University claimed one title or another.

Oklahoma won the AP and UPI polls and the numerical majority of the polls, however, you might want to ask how Arizona State felt about this, or what about Alabama, not even mentioning UCLA’s classic upset! Again, the fans suffered.
