Who would you rather have as your defensive end in college: Lee Roy Selmon or Ross Browner?

Lee Roy Selmon played defensive end for the Oklahoma Sooners. Selmon was the youngest of nine children of Lucious and Jessie Selmon, raised on a farm near Eufaula, Oklahoma. A National Honor Society member at Eufaula High School, he graduated in 1971.

Lee Roy was recruited and played for Chuck Fairbanks in 1972. Barry Switzer became Oklahoma’s coach in 1973. Selmon played for the Sooners from 1972 to 1975. Selmon’s teams won the national championship in both 1974 and 1975. Lee Roy was a consensus All-American in 1974 and 1975, and won the Lombardi Award and the Outland Trophy in 1975. Barry Switzer called him the best player he ever coached. He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.

Ross Browner played defensive end for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was born in Warren, Ohio on March 22, 1954. He was a four year starter from 1973 to 1977 (he didn’t play in 1974.)

Ross was recruited by Ara Parseghian and played for him in 1973; from 1975 to 1977 his coach at Notre Dame was Dan Devine. Ross’ teams won the national championship in 1973 and 1977. He was a consensus All-American in 1976 and 1977. His senior year he was fifth in Heisman voting, that same year he won the Lombardi Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and UPI Lineman of the Year Award (the only player to win this twice.) He is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
