Coach John Wilce was the first coach to beat Michigan in 1919 with the help of College Football Hall of Famer halfback Chic Harley. They beat Michigan 13-3, with Harley scoring the last TD on a 35 or 50 yard run (there is a debate on how long the run was).

Wilce coached Ohio State from 1913 to 1928. During that time, he amassed a record of 78-33-9 and won three Big Ten Championships. In 1954 Wilce was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Wilce’s victory against the Wolverines may have come earlier, if the Wolverines hadn’t left the Big Ten for a period of time due to a disagreement. Wilce’s record vs. Michigan would be 4-7. The victories at the time were considered huge, but nowadays a three game losing streak to Michigan is probably unacceptable.
