In 2005 there were 119 teams in Division 1, 28 bowl games; Reggie Bush, a running back for the USC Trojans, won the Heisman; and Texas won the National Championship.
The Texas Longhorns were led by quarterback Vince Young who was a dual threat quarterback. In 2005 he had 3036 yards passing, threw for 26 touchdowns, ran for 1,050 yards, and scored 12 touchdowns. He was the leader of the Longhorns team and its prolific offense. He was a consensus All-American and finished second in Heisman Trophy balloting.
Texas was tested early in the season in a nail biter of a game in the Horseshoe vs. The Ohio State Buckeyes. It was the second game of the season, at night, and in front of a hostile crowd of over 100,000 fans. The Longhorns won 25-22. This would be their only test until the BCS National Championship game where they would face the USC Trojans in the Rose Bowl.
Texas won the Rose Bowl 41-38 vs. Heisman Reggie Bush and Coach Pete Carroll. Going into the game, USC was ranked #1. Vince Young’s outstanding performance was the difference maker: 467 total yards; 200 rushing yards; 200 passing yards; and three rushing TDS. This was Coach Mack Brown’s first and only National Championship.
