Fullback Sam Francis from the University of Nebraska was the number one pick in the 1937 draft. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played four seasons.

He was the Heisman runner-up in 1936* and placed fourth in the shot put in the 1936 Summer Olympic games. He never got to play for the Eagles as he was traded to the Chicago Bears. He did play for the Bears, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Brooklyn Dodgers over his four-year career.

He left the NFL to get his Masters degree and went on to join the Army where he made it is career. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

* Note: the NFL draft is in the spring after the college season; so, for instance, the 1990 draft corresponds to the 1989 season.
