Michigan last won the National Championship in 1997 when they went 13-0 under head coach Tom Osborne. That year they beat their rival Oklahoma 69-7. They capped off their undefeated season beating the Tennessee Volunteers 42-17 in the Orange Bowl.
That same year Loyd Carr’s Wolverines went 12 -0 and defeated Washington State 21-16 in the Rose Bowl. This was before the BCS and before the playoffs, because of Bowl arrangements with various conferences Nebraska could not play Michigan; the fans were ripped off with two fictitious National Champions.
