Coach John Wilce was the first Ohio State coach to win the Big Ten Championship in 1916 with the help of Hall of Fame halfback Chic Harley. The Buckeyes went 7-0 that year but were not awarded a National Championship, even though they were undefeated and won the Big Ten. That was College Football before the BCS era and before the playoff system.

Wilce coached Ohio State from 1913 to 1928. Over that span he amassed a record of 78-33-9 and won three Big Ten Championships. In 1954 Wilce was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
